"Ignite your passion and brighten the way..."
Dear Parents,
It’s time for summer break!
In order to help your child continue to practice speech and language skills over summer break, Here are activities and ideas that you can complete at home with your child.
Reading with your child can target many language skills!
• Read a passage or look at pictures in a book (1 sentence- two paragraphs depending upon your child’s needs) and ask wh-questions about it.
• Talk about cause-effect relationships found in the passage or story.
• Ask your child to summarize or retell the story using logical sequencing words:(first, then, next, last). You can ask, “What happened “first?” or “What was the “first” thing he/she did?”, etc.
• Talk about semantic features for items in the story to help build vocabulary (function of item, description, location it is found, etc..)
• Talk about what the main character may be feeling and have them support it with details in the story (perspective taking, inferencing)i.e., “Why do you think he/she is sad?”
• Stop while reading a story and talk about what might happen next in the story (prediction skills) and read together to see who is right.
Have a wonderful and safe summer!

In the event South Brunswick Schools move to a remote learning environment, please choose 2-3 daily activities per number of weekly speech sessions from our "DO AT HOME" list or from any of the activity buttons listed below.
Please remember to log your activities.
Below is a sample optional home schedule to help structure your child’s remote learning day. There are some activity ideas listed to help break up the day. You can modify the schedule to what works for you and your child. Where it says “Learning Activities” you could complete class work assigned by your child’s teacher. Again, this is just a suggestion for those parents who are looking for help in structuring the remote learning day.
